Architecture jobs – Feeling the benefit

Salary is important when you apply for an architecture job, but you should also consider the other benefits on offer

Benefits as Remuneration
Although salary is a major concern for most applicants for architecture jobs, additional benefits may also be a part of the remuneration package. Depending on the size of the company, these non-salary benefits can come in various forms. Some companies offer a set range of benefits, whereas others are open to negotiation depending on age, level of experience and length of service.

Relocation
Nationwide organisations such as banks, building societies and local authorities will expect to pay relocation expenses for new or existing employees. Smaller firms may expect the employee to bear their own relocation expenses, for example if you apply for an architecture job with a private firm in the North East and you currently live in the South West, you are making a lifestyle choice.

Shares and Share Options
Granting equity to employees is a common non-salary benefit. Holding equity is a good incentive for employees to perform, as the financial performance of the company will have an effect on the value of their shares. Similarly, share options tie employees into the firm for longer – they will be granted a certain number of options over shares, which they can exercise over specified periods of time.

Pensions, Health and Financial Benefits
Many companies still operate a company pension scheme, or will match employee contributions to a personal pension plan. They may also offer private health insurance, annual bonus schemes and free childcare. If you are lucky enough to get an architecture job with a company that owns property abroad, you could even find yourself in a timeshare scheme that will give you free holidays.

Leisure and Exercise
Whilst large firms may be able to build an on-site gym, others are able to offer free or discounted membership to local gyms or swimming pools, and may also extend this to other related facilities. This isn’t entirely altruistic on their part – it’s in their interest that the successful candidate for the architecture job remains fit and well!

Company Cars, Mobile Phones and Laptops
Many recruitment packages include a company car or a mileage allowance if the applicant for the architecture job is expected to travel to sites and meetings as part of the role. Each company will have a different set of guidelines on the types of cars, length of lease or price per mile. In addition, mobile phones and Personal Data Assistants may be offered, together with in-car kits and wireless connections are available with the latest laptops to ensure that the employee is always within reach of the office.
