Construction jobs – modular housing

Designed as an affordable, energy efficient and ecologically friendly alternative housing, modular living is on the increase and could provide the right construction job for you.

The Prefab
The term ‘prefab’ conjures up a period in design history we’d probably rather forget. But today the range of modular homes available is extensive, and, if you are looking for an alternative construction job, it could be the opportunity for you. Modular homes are kind to the planet, with eco-friendly sustainable plumbing and energy options including solar laminate roof panels, automatic composting toilets, rainwater harvesting systems, propane appliances and wind generator back-ups.

The history
In the past pre-fabs and system-built homes were embraced by councils largely because they were cheap. But a lack of investment and maintenance meant that, before long, the properties leaked and in the worst cases they collapsed. Modular building today is different, and in some cases is at the cutting edge of design technology so applying for a construction job in the field means you could be working in a new and innovative field.

Examples of modular housing
One company in the UK takes shipping containers and transforms them into living spaces. A German company combines the modular home with the houseboat, so you get a solid structure erected on a platform over water. And in Holland modular studios stack up – literally! Modules can be stacked up to 3 rows in height, all sitting on a foundation of concrete plates. There is even a prototype for a rotating module – if you apply for a construction job with this company, you could be building a pod containing three small rooms sitting in the middle of a living area, with each small room accessible as the pod rotates.

Factory built
Modular homes are built in a factory setting where raw materials and design and assembly personnel are brought together in a controlled environment to create a finished product. Costs can be kept to a minimum without compromising quality. Construction within a factory eliminates the possibility of damage from weather and allows all materials to be assembled in a protected climate-controlled environment. Construction jobs in modular housing mean that freezing on a building site is kept to a minimum!

Traditional building techniques are expensive, deadlines are frequently missed and skill shortages push up costs. If the building is brought into the factory, the traditional trades such as bricklaying and joinery come in to the factory too. Factory-produced properties also create minimal disturbance for residents because the build time is less and there are fewer lorries coming to and from the site.

Modular homes are an eco-friendly, cost-effective and technologically advance alternative to bricks and mortar – think about a construction job in modular housing as your investment in the future.
